RUNCELL® Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) works as a non-ionic thickener and rheology modifier in water-based formulations—helping improve viscosity build, suspension stability, and processing consistency in systems such as latex paints, detergents, printing inks, and textile pastes.
RUNCELL® HEC-15K is a free-flowing white, water-soluble cellulose ether with excellent biostability and a high substitution degree. Etherified with hydroxyethyl groups, it dissolves readily in both cold and hot water and delivers strong thickening performance—offering excellent rheological control, suspension, adhesion, emulsification, stability, water retention, and protective colloid properties for stable, reliable formulations.

Recommended Applications
Typical dosage (guideline): 0.10%–1.50% by weight, depending on the system and target viscosity. Optimize through lab trials with your own raw materials.
Latex paints
Can be polymerized with vinyl acetate emulsion to improve stability of polymerizing system within wide range of pH value. In the finished product manufacturing, HEC used as a role of dispersion, stabilization and thickening in paint,especially high-PVA coating, providing excellent coating properties.
Used as thickening agent and adhesive for cement and dry mixed mortars. As its good water retention, it improves the liquidity and performance of mortars and extends open time. Also HEC can improve water retaining ability and adhesive strength when used in wall plasters, render mortars, adhesive plasters and gypsum putty.
HEC can be used in pesticide emulsion and suspension formulationsas thickerner of sprayed emulsion or suspension. It helps bind the pesticide firmly on the foliage, thereby reducing the drift of pesticide and increasing the spray effect.
In oil drilling industry,high-viscosity HEC is mainly used as viscosifier in well-completing or finishing fluid; while low-viscosity HEC is mainly used as water loss controller.HEC used as thickener will impart good mobility and stability to various slurries necessary for drilling,completion, cementing and fracturing operations.In drilling, HEC can increase the sand carrying capability of the slurry and extend the service life of drill bits. In low-solid content comletion fluid and cementing fluid, the excellent water loss control performance of HEC can prevent large amount of water in the slurry from entering into the oil reservoir and enhancing the stabilizing capability of the wall of the reservoir
In shampoo, hair spray, neutrallizer,conditioner and cosmetics, HEC is an effective binder, thickener, stabilizer and dispersant, in powder detergent, it is an anti-dirt-deposition agent. Macromolecule polymerization HEC has the functions of dispersing, emulsifying,suspending and stabilizing in the polymerization or copolymerization of synthetic resin and can be used as protective colloid. It is characterized by its high dispersing ability and the resin product obtained is of thin film, fin, uniform and loose granularity and good flowability, high transparency and easy workability.
HEC can be used as binder and sizing agent in fabric dyeing and printing paste and latex paint, thickener in carpet back sizing material, shape-forming agent and adhesive in glass fiber and finishing agent and binder in leather paste, it provides wide range of viscosities for these coatings and adhesives so as to bind the coating layer uniformly and quickly and improve the definition for printing and dyeing.
