Inositol, also known as cyclohexanol, is widely distributed in animals and plants and is a growth factor of animals and microorganisms. It was first isolated from the heart and liver. There are many cis and trans isomers of inositol in nature, and the naturally occurring isomer is cis-1,2,3,5-trans-4,6-cyclohexanohexanol.
Inositol is usually considered to be vitamin B8, but it is not actually a vitamin. It is a sugar that affects insulin response and several hormones related to emotion and cognition. Inositol also has the characteristic of Yang invigorating, which can resist the destructive effect of free radicals in the brain, circulatory system and other body tissues.
Inositol improves depression, anxiety and other mental disorders by stimulating hormones such as serotonin and dopamine to produce "feel good". The fasting blood glucose of type 2 diabetic patients who were given daily inositol, D-chiral inositol and diabetes drugs decreased significantly. The improvement of blood pressure and cholesterol levels in women who were also assigned inositol supplements after six months was significantly greater than that in women who were given placebo.
