What is EDTA? What are the uses of EDTA for human health?

2022-03-21

EDTA is commonly referred to as Edetic Acid Acid, CAS no. 60-00-4, Molecular Formula C10H16N2O8, which appears as a white crystalline powder.

It is a chelating agent that can combine with divalent metal ions such as magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe). EDTA is widely used as bleaching fixing solution for color photosensitive materials rinsing processing, dyeing AIDS, fiber processing AIDS, cosmetic additives, blood anticoagulants, detergents, stabilizers, synthetic rubber polymerization initiator and so on. It is the representative material of chelating agents.

As most nucleases and some proteases of the human body need Mg2, EDTA and EDTA disodium, EDTA sodium, etc., are also commonly used as inhibitors of nucleases and proteases; It can also be used to remove the inhibition of enzyme by heavy metal ions. It can be widely used in the human body. Such as:

1.Therapy Heavy Metal Poisoning

Since EDTA can chelate with bivalent and trivalent metals to form stable soluble metal complexes and be excreted in the urine, EDTA and its preparations have been used in clinical treatment of lead poisoning since 1950s, can effectively help patients eliminate more than 90% of the body lead.

In addition, EDTA can promote the emission of cu, zn, fe, MN, CD, V, CO and some radioactive elements such as thorium, uranium, radium and plutonium.

2.Enlarged Root Canal

EDTA can chelate with the calcium of tooth and make the tissue of Root Canal decalcify and soften. Therefore EDTA can be used as an auxiliary method of mechanical Root Canal preparation in stomatology.

3. As an anticoagulant

DTA can chelate with coagulation factor IV (CA2 +) in blood, so that Prothrombin can not be activated to prevent blood coagulation, so EDTA and its preparation can be used as anticoagulant in clinic.

4. Prevent the effects of metal ions on enzymes

It is often used in biochemical experiments. For example, metal ions such as calcium and magnesium have been used in combination with trypsin to reduce the activity of trypsin. EDTA has been added in conjunction with the digestive solution of Trypsin to chelate these ions and eliminate the inhibition of Trypsin.

5.EDTA is an ingredient in some prescription cancer drugs

EDTA is an ingredient in some prescription cancer drugs. Some manufacturers of EDTA also supplements claim that oral EDTA can detoxify the body and promote digestive health, but there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. There have also been claims that EDTA may be useful in removing blood clots and treating arterial arteriosclerosis, but there is no scientific basis for this. Its medical use is recommended under medical supervision
