PVDC is a transparent and flexible synthetic thermoplastic made by the polymerization of
vinylidene chloride. It is optically transparent, has high gloss, and has excellent oxygen and moisture barrier properties comparable to metallized films. This makes PVDC an ideal choice for home food packaging and medical and
Pharmaceutical packaging, with extended shelf life and flavor. PVDC is also highly resistant to many chemicals including grease and oil.
PVDC film is easily extruded and compounded. It can be printed with ordinary ink, and it can also be used for microwave heating
The most common type is biaxial PVDC film.
1. It has low stretchability, and provides excellent bonding strength and low water absorption. It also has good adhesion characteristics, making it an ideal choice for food, medicine or special storage packaging applications.
Vinylidene chloride is sometimes copolymerized with other monomers. Common copolymers consist of approximately 85% vinylidene chloride and 15% vinyl chloride. Due to the high cost, PVDC is usually used in combination with other cheaper plastics such as polypropylene, polyethylene and nylon. It is usually used as a thin coating or laminated composite material, or co-extruded with other resins to produce multilayer films or sheets to improve the barrier properties of cheaper base films. Due to its low odor, high chemical resistance and inertness, PVDC is suitable for many packaging applications.
2. Although pure PVDC is recyclable, most PVDC film composite materials cannot be recycled, mainly because PVDC is often used as a very thin composite coating and is not easy to extract.
application
Polyvinylidene chloride film is an attractive transparent packaging film. PVDC (coated) film is mainly used for packaging food, medicine, cosmetics and other perishable or fragile products to extend the shelf life. Compared with many ordinary films, PVDC coated films have excellent gas and moisture barrier properties, as well as excellent heat sealability. PVDC coated films usually compete with films such as acrylic.
