Glutathione can also protect hemoglobin from oxidation by hydrogen peroxide, free radicals, etc., so that it can continue to perform its ability to transport oxygen normally. Part of the hemoglobin in red blood cells is oxidized to ferric iron by hydrogen peroxide and other oxidants, which converts hemoglobin into methemoglobin, thereby losing the ability to carry oxygen. Reduced glutathione can directly combine with hydrogen peroxide and other oxidants to generate water and oxidized glutathione, and it can also reduce methemoglobin to hemoglobin. There is a lot of glutathione in human red blood cells, which is of great significance to protect the sulfhydryl group of the protein on the red blood cell membrane in a reduced state and prevent hemolysis.

Glutathione protects the -SH group in the enzyme molecule, which is conducive to the development of enzyme activity, and can restore the active function of the -SH group in the enzyme molecule that has been destroyed, so that the enzyme can regain its activity. Glutathione can also inhibit fatty liver caused by ethanol invading the liver.

Glutathione has a strong protective effect on the symptoms of leukopenia caused by radiation and radiopharmaceuticals. Glutathione can combine with toxic compounds, heavy metal ions or carcinogens that enter the human body, and promote its excretion from the body to neutralize and detoxify.
